JAY AHR BEIJING PROJECT

BEIJING | It’s time to look back to traditional skills and reinvent them. Transform them into something that fits the modern world but without scraping its most valuable essence: delicate hand work with a timing of its own. Chinese Traditional Embroidery embodies this epic value and thanks to fashion designer Jonathan Riss, it brings fashion a new dimension. Riss launched Jay Ahr in 2005 in Parisienne Rue de Rivoli as a holistic brand that combined all of his passions: fabrics, embroidery, clothers, jewelry and good service. Architecture and art give Riss’ creations a strong sense of multiculturalism combined with his personal discovery of traditional Chinese elements. To further this creative approach to modern embroidery characteristic of his edgy designs, in 2013, Riss created Jay Ahr Beijing Project, a development lab located in Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology  (BIFT) where he researches new embroidery techniques. The designer’s relationship with China started in 2003 when he was collaborating with traditional embroiderers from Hebei. Embroidery artwork is Riss’ personal project. By transferring painting conceptual ideas to embroidery, he pushes this ancient technique to new limits, mixing design and technology. Jay Ahr innovative artworks and fashion designs were exhibited for the first time in Beijing for just two days at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), in Beijing. The exclusive collection included accessories created in collaboration with Italian Luxury Brand TOD’s.
