DASHILAR ALLEY SHINES DURING BEIJING DESIGN WEEK 2013

dashilar BEIJING | The vibrant neighbourhood life found in Dashilar hutong (traditional narrow alley typical of Beijing's urban planning) tells much about the transformation of this city. Beijing is struggling with two great goals: fierce development and preservation of tradition. The Beijing Design Week embodies this constant fight of opposites. Installations and Exhibitions are hidden inside small hutong houses and they can only be discovered if walking down the narrow alleys that conform Dashilar. It’s a great opportunity to interact with the city and also a great reminder that the capital is much more than a city of concrete with very tall buildings and office spaces.
The remnants of a different lifestyle are still present. And they must be protected and cherished while a more sustainable and smarter development is encouraged.
