HONG KONG | To stroll in Shamshuipo is like taking a trip down to memory lane. Not in vain, the impression is like if nothing had changed there. This is one of Hong Kong’s oldest districts with a deeply rooted neighborhood life. It’s busy with restaurants, markets and small shop owners. And unlike the majority of Hong Kong, there ain’t skyscrapers or modern shopping malls. They just wouldn’t fit in; at least for now. Shamshuipo’s unique atmosphere attracted young entrepreneurs and designers Rex Yam Wing-cheong and Joey Ku Cho-yiu when they decided to locate their concept store 22 Degrees North in one of the many decaying pre-war buildings in the district. Surrounded by ribbon shops at Nam Cheong Street, 22 Degrees North –Hong Kong’s latitude- is becoming a hub for creativity among the city’s emerging alternative communities. 22 Degrees North The boutique located on the first floor of the three-story building sells all types of designs from local and international independent designers. Including renowned local brands such Carmen Chan Jewelry,  Made in Eden, OhMyDeer and Cupcake. 22 Degrees North The second floor is reserved to creative workshops; and one level up a steep staircase leads to the top floor where to host pop-up events and exhibitions. 22 Degrees North Traditionally, Shamshuipo is the district where the fabric and other raw materials wholesalers are located. The local businesses are perfectly lined up by streets: Ribbon street, Bead street, Leather street and Button street stretch across the area amidst the charming chaos of old neon signs and urban decay. Shamshuipo is also witness of Hong Kong’s rich historical heritage; and many entrepreneurial spirits are bringing a new vibe to it, as they pick Shamshuipo at the best location for their ateliers, showrooms, coffee shops and creative boutiques.
