HONG KONG | Ludovica Virga embraces life in her own way. Originally from Milano, Italy, she prefers to live and work in Bali, enjoying the beach, the sun and the sunsets. She tells me her adventure when she decided to found her own fashion label, Mua Mua Dolls, with a smile on her face. Like if she were a little girl and had done something she shouldn't have but were proud of it; because she knows she is living her dream. Indeed, she is proud of her journey that took her to Asia to fulfill her dream. From what she calls the House of Mua Mua in Bali, she creates imperfect dolls, with scars in their face. They represent a whimsical world for adults, where celebrities such Anna Wintour, Anna dello Russo, Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, Amy Winehouse, Anna Wintour, Pete Doherty, Obama, Alexander McQueen, Miuccia Prada and Karl Lagerfeld keep on guard to keep away bad energy and turn it into love.
Coco Chanel was the first Mua Mua doll Ludovica designed. "I had this funny idea. If you can't afford a Chanel you can always get a Coco Chanel Mua Mua doll", Ludovica tells me while she is painting a portrait of myself.
Hong Kong renowned boutique Liger store invited her to do live portraits of their VIP clientele. Liger is well known among the fashion savvy hongkongese for their sophisticated, funky, edgy, daring, trendy and bold selection of independent designers from Asia and beyond. And the Mua Mua dolls world; as well as Ludovica's colorful dresses and handbags fit perfectly into Liger's world of eccentric fashion.
Karl Lagerfeld loved the concept, and the moment he took a photo of him holding a Mua Mua doll, Ludovica's project took the fashion scene by storm.
Imperfections are the main trait of Mua Mua dolls. Thinking about celebrities that are not perfect, like anyone else, makes them more interesting.
The Mua Mua dolls are hand-made in Bali by a team of local women, and with natural materials from the island.
