HONG KONG | Stepping into Kotur’s showroom feels like a privileged journey into Fiona Kotur’s creative world. A tunnel through time and space that transports you to the most vivid moments of her life: her passions, her friends, her family, her inspirations, her life in Manhattan –where she was born and raised-, her travels; and of course, her talent. These are some of Fiona’s creative sources, which she uses to design coveted clutches.
Kotur was founded in 2004 when Fiona moved to Hong Kong. There she met an extraordinary 90 year old man who owned a brocades mill. When the craftsman retired, Fiona acquired the mesmerizing remnants of vintage brocade which eventually inspired her to create her own accessories label.
From her very first limited edition of brocade clutches, to her latest AW 2016 collection Fiona has been experimenting with many different styles. She likes to inspire and be inspired; so she is not afraid to push boundaries and bring unexpected stories to her designs.
Fall 2016 collection takes a more romantic and dreamy turn. Inspired by Paul Verlaine’s famous poem Claire de Lune and Van Gogh’s moonlit skies, the clutches are decorated with Astrological motifs. Her signature Espey clutch features starry skies hand embroidered using hand worked techniques from India. Whereas the ancient technique of Cloisonné and ‘star dust’ is used to depict a dreamlike galaxy on her Perspex Merricks.
This celestial and exotic mood is a huge contrast to Fiona’s rebellious and rocking Pre-Fall 2016 collection. The very individual aesthetics of icons such David Bowie, Grace Jones, Lou Reed and Debbie Harry are captured with gold plated, black, white and silver with touches of red and blue. Glittery cloisonné and Swarovski crystals decorate star motifs with a touch of punk.
More classical but extremely elegant designs included croc leather, brocade and snakeskin.
